Becks Label Design Winners : 16th July 2008

Becks Beer

The well known international beer, Becks, have recently run a contest in the UK to find a set of new artistic designs for their beer bottles. We’ve got an exclusive preview of the winning bottle designs, which you can pass your eye over as a designer to let us know what you think.

The designs have been put together by students at the Royal College of Art and Design, in London. Whilst it’s a big step away from what we consider to be ‘contemporary design’ online, it does capture the essence of the UK and Britain to an extent – with an abstract twist.

Personally, I’ve never been a huge fan of very abstract artwork, but I think these could prove to be an interesting talking point – and a great stepping stone for the new artists (such as Tom Price, below):

It showcases the vast differences between product design and website design. However, the idea of using contemporary thinking and new talent to re-design a corporate brand is a great one, and something that could move across equally well to online design.

What are your thoughts?

I love contemporary and abstract art but this has to be some of the worst design/art I have seen. The color and the choice of images are so bland and have no visual appeal. Is there a way to see the other designs?

I'm afraid not, I think these are the winners. The designs are very simple, but do have some meaning and conveyence to the British brand.

Hmmn... I'm not sure, I'd like to know abit more about the thought structure behind these... I'm just not getting the concept really or making the connection to the essence of Britain. It's definatly abstract and I can appreciate that a fair bit of thought has gone in...

Love your site! Curious, though - why is that damned Dean Oakley site cluttering my RSS feeder? You need to get that fixed! I agree it's a great site, but posting it 28 times in 24 hours is kind of annoying. :)

If you need to know a bit more about the structure behind it, then it proves that it isn't a great move. When you come up with a new label (especially since this being an "artistic series") It should hit the customer from a mile a way.

What does a duck have to do with beer? And where did the corporate design go? Relaunching is nice but at least you have to see which product it was before...

Was very intersted in the lables and looked on t'internet (having drunk a few) and was pleased to find the answer here. I think this was a very good way to bring art to the masses, and certainly created a talking point among my drunk mates. We like the duck billed bunny best!

Just random images, but maybe that's the key. Nice.
